Good news for frequent flyers! IndiGo has introduced a new ‘IndiGo Lite’ which is a perfect gift for travellers who fly with just a backpack or a small cabin suitcase. According to a Reuters report, the airline has launched a new fare category called IndiGo Lite, which is offering cheaper airfares for passengers travelling with only cabin baggage. The move shows a growing global trend in aviation where travellers pay only for the services they actually use, making flying more affordable and flexible.
It’s an ideal category for budget travellers, weekend explorers or business travellers or solo backpackers. Let’s find out more about this deal:
Understanding IndiGo Lite
IndiGo Lite was launched on July 1, 2026. It is a new entry-level economy fare and people can easily book through the airline's website, mobile app and contact centre for travel starting July 15. The new fare is designed keeping in mind those people who do not need to check in luggage.
Rules under the new fare:
Passengers can carry one cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg
An auto-assigned seat is included
Checked baggage is not included in the base fare
Travellers can purchase optional services such as checked baggage, preferred seating, meals, Fast Forward priority service
Why the new category
It’s a simple concept. Travellers who pack light should pay accordingly. Some time back, Air India too introduced a basic economy fare that excluded complimentary meals. This shows the Indian aviation sector’s eagerness to move towards more flexible pricing structures.
Lower ticket prices
The biggest advantage is natural—cheaper fares. While IndiGo has not announced a fixed amount by which Lite fares will be lower, even modest savings can make a significant difference for families or frequent flyers.
The new fare category is perfect for:
Weekend breaks
Business day trips
Solo travellers
Students
Backpackers
Many travellers already manage comfortably with a 7 kg cabin bag for trips lasting two or three days.
Benefits include:
No waiting at baggage drop counters
Less time
Savings
Reduced risk of delayed or misplaced luggage
This can significantly shorten the overall travel experience.
A flexible service
This doesn’t mean that travellers who later decide they need extra luggage can’t do anything about it. Such travellers can simply buy checked baggage as an optional service before departure and can pay only when necessary.
