New Delhi: Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has expressed his desire to return to India after receiving relief in the FEMA case to the 2009 IPL. He says that the 16-year legal battle is now over and if all goes well, he could return to India by the end of this year or early next year. 

What did Lalit Modi say? 

Lalit Modi says he is deeply relieved by the Appellate Tribunal’s decision. He says he has maintained for years that he did nothing wrong, and now the court’s decision has strengthened his position. He stated that his biggest concern has always been the future of the IPL, and now that the case is over, he wants to move on with his life. Regarding the timing of his return to India, Modi stated that his daughter is due to give birth in October. He added that he plans to return to India after spending time with his family.

This case involved the hosting of the second season of the IPL in South Africa in 2009. The investigation and legal proceedings in this case lasted nearly 16 years. Now, in its decision, the tribunal has held that the foreign remittances in question fell under the category of “current account transactions,” and therefore, the charges against them were not sustained.

During the hearing, the tribunal also clarified that Lalit Modi was not personally responsible for ensuring compliance by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Furthermore, he did not possess the financial authority claimed by the investigating agency. Based on this, the tribunal revoked the fine imposed on him and granted him relief in this case.
