Kinshasa. The current Ebola outbreak in the Central African country Democratic Republic of Congo has taken its most dangerous form so far. According to government data, so far 4,381 infected patients have been confirmed in the country, out of which 2,011 people have died. At present 704 patients are battling for life and death in different hospitals and isolation wards.
Deaths doubled in three weeks
The speed of this epidemic can be gauged from the fact that it took about nine weeks for the first one thousand deaths to occur, whereas within the next three weeks the second one thousand deaths were recorded. Health workers and relief agencies say that medicines and medical aid are not reaching remote and extremely inaccessible areas in time, due to which the death toll is increasing rapidly.
No vaccine, no treatment – this is the biggest difficulty
The Bundibugyo Ebola virus spread this time is completely different and more dangerous than previous outbreaks. There are effective vaccines and treatments for the Zaire Ebola viruses that spread in 2014-16 and 2018, but there is neither an approved vaccine nor a specific treatment for the Bundibugyo virus responsible for the current wave. According to the World Health Organization, the disease began spreading quietly in the most remote and vulnerable areas of Congo in February, even before its formal announcement in May.
The country's biggest outbreak since 1976
It is noteworthy that the Ebola virus was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in Congo. Since then, this has become the 17th and largest outbreak in the country. Doctors Without Borders and WHO teams are working on the ground to save patients and break the chain of infection, but due to the instability of the region and the lack of an approved vaccine, the epidemic is becoming increasingly severe.
