Supreme Court rejects Trump’s renewed petition
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday again rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a $5 million verdict awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll.
Trump’s attorneys asked the justices to reconsider their earlier refusal to hear his appeal.
The court denied that petition alongside several others.
Although the Supreme Court occasionally reconsiders such decisions, granting these requests is unusual.
Trump already paid the judgment
The Supreme Court initially declined to hear Trump’s appeal in June.
Trump paid the $5 million judgment shortly afterward.
Monday’s decision leaves intact the jury’s finding that Trump sexually abused Carroll at a New York City department store during the mid-1990s and later defamed her.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing.
Jury found Trump liable in 2023
Carroll is a longtime advice columnist and former television talk show host.
During the 2023 trial, she testified that a friendly encounter with Trump became a violent attack inside a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman.
The luxury department store is located across from Trump Tower in Manhattan.
Jurors found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll and defaming her when he denied her allegation in 2022.
Separate $83 million appeal remains pending
Trump and the Justice Department have also asked the Supreme Court to overturn a separate $83 million verdict in Carroll’s favor.
That case involves comments Trump made about Carroll in 2019 while serving as president.
His attorneys and the Justice Department argue that presidential immunity protects him from being sued over those statements.
The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether it will hear that appeal.
Carroll publicly identified herself
The Associated Press generally does not identify people who say they have experienced sexual assault unless they choose to identify themselves publicly.
Carroll has spoken publicly about her allegation and testified about it in court.
