Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran are set to share the screen in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming film Daayra, a tense police drama that brings together two characters with very different personalities and approaches to their work.

The film centres on two police officers, Ajooni and Raman, whose contrasting temperaments form the heart of the story. While Kareena plays Ajooni, Prithviraj portrays Raman, with both characters finding themselves involved in difficult situations where the difference between right and wrong is not always clear.

Ahead of the trailer launch, director Meghna Gulzar had offered audiences a glimpse into Kareena’s character. She described Ajooni as a calm and difficult-to-read woman who could understand and break through complicated situations without losing her composure.

According to Gulzar, Ajooni is “stoic, unreadable” and has the ability to “crack open situations and people with a smile.” The description suggests a character who relies more on intelligence, observation and emotional control than on aggression.

Kareena’s role also marks a different side of the actor, with Gulzar suggesting that audiences would get to see her in a way they had not experienced before. The character’s quiet confidence and strong sense of justice are expected to play an important role in the film.

Prithviraj, meanwhile, takes on the role of Raman, another police officer whose personality stands in sharp contrast to Ajooni’s. Raman is driven by a powerful sense of anger, although he does not openly display his emotions. His intensity remains largely beneath the surface, making him a very different kind of officer.

Gulzar had described the two central characters as the “Ying and Yang” of Daayra, highlighting how their personalities complement and oppose each other at the same time. Ajooni is fiercely committed to what she believes is right, while Raman carries a more forceful and intense energy.

The film also represents a significant collaboration between the Hindi and Malayalam film industries. Bringing Kareena and Prithviraj together had been an exciting casting opportunity for Gulzar, who described the combination as a dream come true.

Daayra draws inspiration from several real incidents that took place across India. Rather than concentrating on a single event or a particular geographical location, the film explores a series of situations that could have occurred in different parts of the country.

The story is expected to examine complicated circumstances where there may not always be a straightforward division between good and bad or right and wrong. This approach connects Daayra with themes that Gulzar has explored in several of her previous films, including Talvar, Raazi, Chhapaak and Sam Bahadur.

At the centre of the narrative are Ajooni and Raman, two law enforcement officers who may share the same profession but do not always approach difficult circumstances in the same way. Gulzar has summed up their personalities by describing Ajooni as “fiercely righteous” and Raman as “righteously fierce.”

The film has been directed by Meghna Gulzar, who has also co-written the screenplay with Yash Keswani and Sima Agarwal. Junglee Pictures and Dr Jayantilal Gada’s Pen Studios have backed the project, while Pen Marudhar is handling its distribution.

With its combination of a police-driven storyline, real-event inspiration and two sharply contrasting lead characters, Daayra is expected to offer a tense and character-focused drama. The pairing of Kareena and Prithviraj further adds to the anticipation surrounding the project.

The trailer is scheduled to be released on August 31, giving audiences their first extended look at Ajooni, Raman and the world they inhabit. Daayra is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on September 18.
