Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada has shared his reaction after the club learned their group-stage opponents for the 2026/27 Champions League campaign.
The Champions League will see United return for the first time since their woeful 2023/24 season, when Erik ten Hag’s side were knocked out after finishing bottom of their group in embarrassing fashion.
The Dutch manager and his players managed only one Champions League win in that campaign, defeating Copenhagen.
Their exit was confirmed by a poor record of one draw and four defeats from the other five group matches, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the standings.
United will be keen to put that behind them, and earlier on Thursday evening they discovered who they will face in the group stage of the competition.
The Red Devils have been drawn against Bayern Munich (H), Atletico Madrid (A), Roma (H), Sporting (A), RB Leipzig (H), Villarreal (A), Sabah (H) and Como (A).
To reach the knockout stage, United must finish in the top eight of the 32-team league table, or else come through a play-off round if they place between ninth and 24th.
Berrada spoke to the media after the draw and gave his thoughts.
Asked how excited he is that United are back in Europe’s most prestigious club competition, Berrada said, “We’re very excited.”
“This is a competition that we think we need to be playing in every season. We have some fantastic opponents.”
“Old Trafford has been the home of some great moments in this competition, so hopefully we’ll create new memories for our fans.”
When asked whether there is one particular match he is especially looking forward to, Berrada replied, “I think Bayern Munich at home.”
“Obviously, the 1999 final was iconic in the history of the club. But we’re looking forward to playing against all these great opponents, at home and away. And as I said, hopefully we’ll create some really good memories for our fans.”
Berrada stressed that United are targeting Champions League glory and will approach the campaign one match at a time.
