Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technology is now being used in the Supreme Court of India also. The use of AI has started in the courts to make judicial processes more effective and faster. AI is mainly being used in writing oral arguments, filing cases and translating legal documents. It is not being used in taking judicial decisions. The aim of this initiative is not only to speed up the functioning of the court but also to help the judges in legal research.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwale had informed in Rajya Sabha that oral arguments in Supreme Court constitutional bench cases are being transcribed with the help of AI. These transcripts have been made available on the official website of the Supreme Court. Additionally, in collaboration with the National Informatics Center (NIC), the Supreme Court Registry is using AI tools to translate judgments from English into 18 Indian languages. These languages include Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Punjabi, Malayalam, Assamese, Odia, Nepali, Kashmiri, Konkani, Santali, Garo and Khasi.

Supreme Court Registry has developed AI and ML based prototyping tools in collaboration with IIT Madras. These tools will be integrated with Electronic Filing Module and Case Management Software (ICMIS). Additionally, approximately 200 advocates-on-record have been given access to understand the impact and utility of these tools.

The government has clarified that AI will have no role in taking judicial decisions. At present it is being used only for transcription and translation during Constitutional Bench hearings. There are plans to adopt it during regular hearings in future also.
