Dehradun: The impact of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on India is being felt strongly in Uttarakhand. The 50 percent tariff, imposed on July 31, 2025, has severely affected exports from the state, especially in handicrafts, artificial jewellery, agriculture, and food processing.
According to the Industries Association of Uttarakhand, exports have declined by nearly 20 percent since the tariffs were introduced. The association’s report highlights that around 25 units in Haridwar and Dehradun are among the worst affected, suffering an estimated annual loss of Rs 2 billion.
Handicrafts and artificial jewellery have been hit the hardestProducts made in Dehradun factories were in high demand in the US market, but the tariffs have made them more expensive. As a result, many factories have reduced production, leading to job cuts and financial strain. Agricultural and food processing units are also struggling, with exports falling sharply.
Pankaj Gupta, president of the Industries Association of Uttarakhand, said that nearly 50 units in Haridwar and Dehradun are facing serious challenges. Around 1,000 workers have already lost their jobs due to reduced production and declining exports. Gupta added that businesses are now trying to find new markets to survive.
Uttarakhand’s industries see Europe as a ray of hope for recoveryEntrepreneurs are turning their attention to Europe, hoping to expand their business there. However, tensions between the US and European countries have also increased, with Trump threatening tariffs on Europe as well. Despite this uncertainty, Uttarakhand’s industries see Europe as a ray of hope for recovery.
The association’s report warns that if the situation continues, more jobs could be lost and production could fall further. Gupta confirmed that he will submit the report to the government, urging support for affected industries and help in finding alternative markets.
Impacted families dependent on these industriesThe decline in exports has not only hurt businesses but also impacted families dependent on these industries. Handicrafts and jewellery, which once brought pride and income to Uttarakhand, are now struggling to survive in the global market. Farmers and food processors are also worried about the future of their products.
Experts believe that diversification of markets and government support will be crucial in overcoming this crisis. While the US tariffs have created major challenges, Uttarakhand’s industries are determined to adapt and find new opportunities.
