How to recover money sent to the wrong number on PhonePe or Google Pay: Sending money through PhonePe, Google Pay (GPay), and other UPI apps has become incredibly easy these days. Transactions are completed in just a few seconds. However, this speed can sometimes lead to mistakes, such as sending money to the wrong number or UPI ID. The biggest question then is, can the money be recovered? Let's find out.
Can a UPI transaction be reversed?
UPI transactions are very fast, so once the money is transferred, it cannot be directly reversed. However, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has created a UPI Auto-Reversal system in some cases, which increases the possibility of getting the money back in certain situations.
Under what circumstances can the money be recovered?
You can request a reversal of a UPI transaction in these situations:
If the transaction is pending or failed.
If the money has been sent to the wrong UPI ID or mobile number.
If a transaction has occurred from your account without your permission.
However, in all these cases, if the transaction has been completed, the money can only be recovered if the recipient is willing to return it.
What to do if you have accidentally sent money?
If you have sent money to the wrong person on PhonePe or GPay, take these steps immediately:
Check the transaction details in the UPI app. Note down the transaction ID, date, and amount.
Go to the 'Help' or 'Support' section of the app. You will find an option for 'Wrong Transfer' or 'Transaction Issue'.
Contact your bank or UPI customer care. Provide them with all the details so that the complaint can be registered quickly.
Filing a complaint quickly is very important, as many banks and UPI apps have a time limit for filing complaints.
If necessary, file a police complaint. If the recipient refuses to return the money, an FIR can also be filed on the advice of the bank.
How long does it take to get the money back? If your case falls under UPI Auto-Reversal and the bank approves it, the money may be credited back to your account within a few days. However, the process may vary slightly depending on the bank and the app.
Keep these points in mind:
When using UPI, always double-check the name and number before sending money.
Do not share your UPI PIN with anyone.
Also, keep a record of your transactions.
By keeping these small things in mind, you can keep your money safe.
