  • Historic phase of AM/NS India!
  • First company to get ‘Green Steel Certification’ from ‘Ministry of Steel’

Mumbai February 2026: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has become the first integrated steel producer in the country to receive the new ‘Green Steel Certification’ from the ‘Ministry of Steel’ under the new Green Steel Taxonomy. AM/NS India’s ‘Hot Rolled’ (HR) coils and sheets have received a four-star rating and ‘Cold Rolled’ (CR) coils and sheets have received a three-star rating.

These products – key inputs for the automotive, infrastructure, defence, construction equipment and consumer durables sectors – are now officially recognized for government certified green steel, enabling customers to reduce Scope 3 emissions across their value chains (or value chains).

Eligibility for certification is based on the emissions intensity (or emission intensity) of the steel production (or product) with a threshold (or threshold) of less than 2.2 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of finished steel (tCO₂e/tfs) being considered eligible. Steel produced with emissions below this threshold (or threshold) is rated as green steel under a three-tier system: three-star, four-star or five-star.

To get the certification, AM/NS India had to undergo a rigorous (or rigorous/kadak) inspection by the ‘National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology’ (NISST), which confirmed that the company’s flagship (or major) flat steel portfolio meets the green steel criteria.

Mr. Dilip Oommen, CEO, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), said: “India’s Green Steel Taxonomy provides a clear path forward for the steel industry and its decarbonisation. AM/NS India has been producing low carbon steel with measurable efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and its new design further supports this commitment. This certification reflects our progress in this direction with investments focused on ‘low carbon’ processes and clean energy. This recognition demonstrates our focus on delivering on our brand promise of ‘Smarter Steels, Brighter Future’. This development also reinforces the important role steelmakers play in supporting national climate goals, as well as being globally competitive”.

AM/NS India’s ability to secure ‘green steel’ certification for its flat steels reflects its structural ‘lower-carbon’ product profile. About 65% of the company’s steelmaking capacity is based on the ‘Direct Reduced Iron’ (DRI) route using natural gas, which significantly reduces dependence on ‘coal-based processes’. This has supported a reduction of more than 35% in Carbon Dioxide Emissions Intensity (or Emission Intensity) since 2015.3

The company’s emissions performance has been further strengthened by the integration (or collection) of renewable energy, with power supplied by the nearly 1 GW hybrid renewable energy project developed by ‘AM Green Energy’ at Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. The project has started supplying clean power to ‘AM/NS India’s’ important Hazira plant in Gujarat by 2025.

In December 2025, ArcelorMittal has announced an investment of around USD 0.9 billion in three more renewable energy projects in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat, which facilities will supply power to ‘AM/NS India’. Once completed, these projects will double ArcelorMittal’s renewable energy capacity in India to 2 GW.

In parallel, AM/NS India is developing its own hybrid energy project in Bhachau, Gujarat, with 300 MW of solar power and 250 MW of wind power, which will save an estimated 90 lakh (or .9 million) tonnes annually.

By securing the certification, AM/NS India has commenced commercial production of four-star rated HR products and three-star rated CR products, providing local customers with a reliable, government-verified green steel option and strengthening India’s position globally as a competitive and sustainable steel producer.

In FY25, AM/NS India achieved 14% lower CO₂ emissions intensity (or emission intensity) compared to the national average. The company aims to reduce the emissions intensity by 20% by 2030 from the baseline of 2021.
