X has established a set of strict rules and action limits for its users. The company has now set specific caps on the number of posts you can publish, direct messages (DMs) you can send, and people you can follow within a single day.
The company states that these limits have been implemented to ensure that the app continues to run smoothly—without any glitches or crashes (server downtime)—for its millions of users worldwide. Let's take a look at what these limits are and how they function.
**Uniform Rules Across All Platforms**
The first thing you need to know is that these limits apply to your entire account across the board. Whether you are using the mobile app (Android/iOS), a web browser, or a third-party tool, all your activities are aggregated and counted collectively.
**Daily Limits on X**
When it comes to daily limits on X, a specific threshold has been established for every type of activity. For instance, to prevent spam, you are restricted to following a maximum of 400 new accounts per day. Furthermore, once your account reaches the milestone of following 5,000 people, your ability to follow additional users subsequently depends on your own follower count and engagement levels.
Similarly, there are specific limits regarding the number of posts and replies you can publish. If your account is unverified (i.e., you do not possess a "Blue Tick"), you are limited to creating approximately 50 new posts and sending 200 replies per day. While the platform-wide maximum daily limit is technically set at 2,400 posts, X breaks this quota down into smaller, half-hourly increments. This measure ensures that no single user can publish a massive volume of posts in rapid succession.
In addition to all the above, users who link their X accounts to external scheduling apps or analytics tools are subject to a specific hourly API limit. In such a scenario, if you use numerous third-party tools simultaneously, your allotted limit may be exhausted sooner than expected.
What happens if the limit is reached?
If you exceed your daily limits for posting, messaging, or following, there is absolutely no need to panic. Should this occur, X will immediately display an error message on your screen. This will alert you as to exactly which limit you have exceeded.
This does not constitute an account ban or a permanent penalty; rather, it is a time-based system. This means you simply need to wait for the specific limit's timer to reset. This process may take anywhere from a few hours to until the following day. Once this waiting period is over, your account will return to normal functionality, and you will be able to post or send messages once again.
However, you should also keep in mind that occasionally—when the platform experiences a sudden surge in traffic—X may temporarily lower these limits even further to prevent its servers from crashing.
